The Seasons by James Thomson illustrated with Engravings by F. Bartolozzi & P W Tomkins, historical engravers to their Majesties; from original pictures painted for the work by William Hamilton RA.
Book Description
Quarto. pp [iv], 236. Collated and correct, the prelims run engraved frontis, title page, list of plates, part-title Spring, followed by the text of the poem. Five full-page engraved plates, five half-page engravings, plus five large, half-page vignettes on each of the part titles. Sixteen illustrations in all. A very beautiful piece of printing. This is a reprint by Bensley, drawing on plates from the 1797 illustrated edition, the plates in this one also bearing dates 1797 or 1798. The four seasons are followed by a concluding hymn, making five parts in all. Contemporary half-calf on marbled boards, edges speckled, marbled endpapers, show through to the marbled paper from the leather beneath on boards, recent reback, original spine relaid with slight loss (see photos), contemporary armorial book plate of L P Shaw Storey, with the motto Sola Virtus Rediit Noblem. There is a little foxing to the full-page plates, otherwise a clean example of this renowned work.
