A Chinese Yuan dynasty play by Li Xingdao (d. c.1350). This English translation is from the French translation, Hoe-lan-ki; ou, L'histoire du cercle de craie; drama en prose et en vers,’ by Stanislas Julien 1797-1873), published in 1832. Illustrated by John Buckland-Wright (1897-1954), New Zealand born artist, engraver and lecturer at Camberwell and the Slade. Preface by Gwyn Williams (1904-1990), Welsh poet and translator. Handsome limited edition of the Chinese drama which was the basis for the 1948 play, The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht.
