Dealer Notes
FIRST EDIITON IN ENGLISH, a seminal text on the techniques of art of the Middle Ages, authorship still conjectural, but an important original source none-the-less. Its first publication in English translation coincides with a renewed interest in the arts and crafts of the early period, and it is dedicated to Albert, The Prince Consort. This copy is inscribed, probably by the translator, 'to Mrs G S Cautly...Jan 22/48' and whilst it is impossible to certain as to the recipient it was probably the wife of Rev George Spencer Cautley, a dilitante artist and antiquary with a special interest in emblematic symbolism in art. A very good copy of a title hard to find in good original state.
