Dealer Notes
Originally a novella, "Obi; Or, Three Fingered Jack" was written by William Earle and published in 1800. The story revolves around an escaped Jamaican slave and folk hero Jack Mansong, who was believed to have gained his strength from the Afro-Caribbean religion of obeah, or “obi", and his effort to avenge his family and people. This chapbook, part of a series of cheap 'school books' published for children by W.C. Bysh & Co., condenses the original story into nine pages, and follows it up with a short history of the four-time Lord Mayor of London, Richard "Dick" Whittington, the real-life inspiration for English folk tale "Dick Whittington and His Cat". This is a rare item — no copies exist on World Catalogue or Library Hub.
