Sheffield and its Neighbourhood. Photographically Illustrated by...
Book Description
An exceptional copy of the First Edition with an important local association being from the library of Willis Dixon of Hillsborough Hall with his armorial bookplate to the pastedown. Sixteen mounted albumen prints by the Sheffield photographer Theophilus Smith and a text by John Holland. (Identified in the one plate edition pub by Pawson and Brailsford). "Mr Theophilus Smith laid upon the table a handsome volume, entitled " Sheffield and its Neighbourhood Photographically Illustrated,"which he had just published and which was greatly admired. The Illustrations of which there are sixteen, are very fine; consisting principally of views of places more or less historically interesting. There is also one which may be said to be of national interest being an interior view of John Brown & Companys Armour Plate Works wherein are represented the forgeman at their work. Another illustration especially interesting to photographers, being an instantaneous street view (High Street) taken so late in the year as an afternoon in Sept " [The British Jnl of Photography 13/1/1865 p 22 ] Crown Quarto xii.132pps. All edges gilt (Gersheim 279.*) The book's publication by the leading London publisher of photographically illustrated books placed a Sheffield photographer in the company of Roger Fenton and Francis Bedford and would presumably have been a source of civic pride. The book put Sheffield on the map artistically and historically whilst reminding readers that the wealth and prosperity of the town was in part, the production of world-class armaments.
