Book Description

PALMER, A.H. The Life And Letters Of Samuel Palmer, Painter & Etcher. Published by Seeley & Co., London., 1892. Illustrated throughout. First edition Illustrated throughout and complete with Samuel Palmer’s original etching "The Willow". The etching is well struck and unmarked. Collates; [ xiii] list of illustrations, half title, original etching, pp 422, [ii]. The book is bound in the original blue cloth now faded to brown, with gilt vignette to the front board and gilt lettering. Some foxing, mainly limited to the first and last few leaves. The outer hinges cracked but now sound. The corners are bumped and there is some loss to the spine ends. A Very Good copy internally. The etching of “ The Willow” was executed in 1850, as a probationary etching on Palmer’s admission to the Etching Club. The etched surface measures 90 mm x 67 mm.. It is signed in the lower left hand corner “ S.Palmer 1850” and this is the second of three states of the etching (plus one more printing where the plate has been defaced and cancelled). The etching is more conventionally produced than subsequent works, possibly because Palmer was being rather timid in order not to draw criticism when his work was examined by the Etching Club . His son, A.H Palmer , author of this book wrote “ It should be noted that the tree in this etching was practically copied from a careful water- colour study made from nature and of a much larger size…”
