Book Description

The Second World War (6 Volumes), Winston S. Churchill, Cassell, First Edition, First Impressions A series of six volumes chronicling the Second World War in enormous detail and illustrated throughout by numerous maps and diagrams. Churchill used his own notes and privileged access to official documents while still serving as Leader of the Opposition. He was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize In Literature. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find very good sets of this monumental work. Most are characterised by torn and ripped dust jackets due to the economy paper used at the time, faded red tint to the top edge, mildew affected boards and faded to the point of missing red titles to the spine. This set has as prominent titles to the spine as we have seen (indeed titling to the front covers is superb), so much more appealing when side on on the shelf, red tint substantially retained and equally across all volumes, no mildew and only minor nibbling and losses to the some of the edges. Each volume is a First Edition, First Impression with a dust jacket protected in a clear, removable cover. Volume I - The Gathering Storm - 1948 In near fine condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is minimal shelf wear to the top edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears. There is a neat owners name to the front end paper and foxing to the fore and bottom edges. The top edge retains its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket is in very good condition with loss to the top edge of the front cover, loss and nibbling to the top edge of the spine, loss and nibbling to the bottom edge of the spine, loss and nibbling to the top edge of the back covering loss to the top corner of the front cover. Volume II - Their Finest Hour - 1949 In near fine condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean apart from a mark to the bottom edge of the back board, and the lettering on the spine bright. There is a small indentation to the top edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears. There is a neat owners name to the front end paper and faint foxing to the fore and bottom edges. The top edge retains its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket is in near fine condition with loss to the top edge of the front cover, nibbling and slight loss to the top edge of the spine and slight nibbling to the top edge of the back cover. Volume III - The Grand Alliance - 1950 In near fine condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is minimal shelf wear to the top edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears. Volume IV - The Hinge Of Fate - 1951 In very good condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. The end papers and pages are free from tears. The unclipped dust jacket is in near fine condition with slight nibbling to the top and bottom edges of the spine, a crease mark to the bottom edge of the back cover and slight loss to the bottom corner of the front cover.
