Dealer Notes
Although the title states 494 plates, the numbered sequence shows 1 - 466, with an additional 24 lettered plates. Two are missing from the sequence: 54, which is probably a printer’s error as there is no description for this plate and the copy reproduced at the Internet Archive also lacks this plate; and 86, which was never issued and a note in the text refers [p.247]. An analysis of the text shows that number 466 is the final plate described.
Rare, with no complete copy having appeared at auction. Originally published in parts in 1733, the number of plates seems to vary from copy to copy and it has proved impossible to obtain an accurate collation, certainly the plates in this copy coincide with the text descriptions. The contents were assembled from numerous other printed sources from all over Europe: Vitruvius, Bramante, Julio Romano, Michaelangelo, Carlo Cesere Osio, Palladio, Scamozzi, Vignola, Serlio, Barbaro, etc. It was intended as a pattern or copy book for builders, architects and gentlemen. Here it has the ownership signatures of Abraham Bodle and John Danns. Ref: Weinreb Catalogue 10, Charles B. Wood Catalogue IX.
