Boxiana; or, Sketches of Ancient and Modern Pugilism from the Days of the Renowned Broughton and Slack, to the Championship of Cribb
Book Description
A five volume set. Dimensions 23 cms by 15 cms..
Dealer Notes
Complete sets of 'Boxiana' are not easily found, and this applies to first edition sets and to sets made up from first editions and/or the several early reprints. This set is a particularly handsome example, in very upmarket bindings. There are 49 plates and an extra engraved title page, as called for in Hartley's 'Bibliography of Boxing Books', where these works are described in entry #587. Note that Vol. 1 in our set has one extra plate but Vol. 4 does not have the frontispiece ( 'William Fuller' ) called for in the list of plates in that volume. All the volumes have their original illustrated paper wrappers bound in at the rear, all with the Virtue imprint, which would suggest that this is the five volume set Hartley mentions as marketed by Virtue in 1830 ( using old stock of the volumes - hence the varying publication dates above ).
