Railway Conveyances from Liverpool to Manchester
Book Description
Aquatint, with contemporary hand colouring. Several versions of this well known print were issued during the period 1831 to 1834. The artist was Isaac Shaw. The backgrounds change from issue to issue, as does the arrangement of the rolling stock. NB The four illustrations and their printed titles have been cut from the original single sheet ( some versions were issued as two sheets ) and fixed into a custom mount with nine windows. The cut sections appear to have been mounted on a card backing. The print was obviously put into this display format many decades ago and it would be fair to say that a rare print would not, hopefully, be treated in this manner today.
Dealer Notes
Four trains are shown travelling on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, which was opened in 1830 under the supervision of its chief engineer, George Stephenson (1781-1848). The first locomotive shown is the 'Liverpool', hauling first-class carriages and a mail coach. The second is the 'Fury' hauling second-class carriages. The third is the 'North Star' hauling goods wagons and the fourth is the 'Jupiter', hauling carriages carrying livestock.
