Book Description

Spoon River Anthology, Edgar Lee Masters, Macmillan, 1916, New Illustrated Edition Illustrated by Oliver Hereford This is the first printing of the complete poems (36 were added after the 1915 edition), together with a frontispiece and six plates. Each poem, of which there are 244, is the story of a deceased citizen in the first person, and once knotted together form a fascinating story of time and place. Master's characters were based on local people. A classic in American literature that has been a staple of the school curriculum for nearly a century. The binding is straight and tight, the black boards with black writing on gilt design to the front and gilt writing to the spine have a little shelf wear and fade to the spine. The endpapers and pages gilt edged to the top and otherwise rough cut are clean without tears or inscriptions. No dust jacket. Will be dispatched by courier carefully packaged in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.
