Dealer Notes
The book runs to some 32pp of text divided into four sections covering different time periods. The pages are separated from each other with heavy tissue protecting the 36 original watercolour drawings of people, locations (such as the Kariba dam) and incidents. In addition there is a full page hand drawn and wash map of Northern and Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland and a fine full page photograph of Salisbury. Immediately after Gourley's arrival in May 1945 he visited Ndola by train, the journey taking nine days. Later he was able to travel by small plane and one of the illustrations shows his first trip to Nyasaland; neither Gourley nor his travelling colleague Mr Connel were slim the effect being that the plane was too narrow to close the door on the pair sitting side by side and requiring Connell to hold tight to the door to prevent their falling out in transit.
Apart from some light staining or other marking on the end papers and some slight bowing of the covers the work is in extremely good condition. The watercolour drawing are pertinent and done with great skill, making this unique item a highly desirable artefact of the period of Unilever's southern African development.
We'll be happy to give more detailed information or to supply images of other pages on request.
